Mobility limitations occur for many reasons including accidents, aging, chronic pain, genetic disorders, can all change a person’s ability to stand, walk,and move around and maintain balance. Standard and and more complexed mobility aids including canes, crutches, walkers, manual wheelchairs to high tech automatic chairs,, technical solutions for lost of hand movement all of which offer innumerable benefits for the individuals who need them. However, the one AAAD feels that works best along side and enhances all mobility devices has a warm heart and a wagging tail and is on call 24/7 and also adds much noted social and emotional benefits. No scenerio or disability is more or less valid or legimate than the other. The function of a mobility assist dog depends on the needs of the handler and the handler's disablility.
Assistance dogs have much to offer to those with limited mobility, from helping an ambulatory partner walking up a incline steading when that unexpected step is there bracing, and counterbalancing work on rising from a seat or from a fall. They're been known to carry small oxygen tanks in specially designed back packs. Those in manual wheelchairs can receive a pull when the going gets tough in addition to these physical tasks they help interacting in their enviromjent with pressing out of reach buttons and switches picking up dropped items bringing the phone or medication, helping with laundry, getting dressed, carrying the shopping to taking the garabge out.
